I was glad to see NYC has a program for discarding Christmas trees. It's called Mulchfest! You bring your tree to a local park and their is a machine there to make good mulch out of it. I liked that it was so environmentally friendly and solved two problems at the same time.

Not to sound like a downer here, but you have to be careful where you get mulch from. When you buy mulch in bags, for the most part, the mulch has been zapped with low levels of radiation to kill off any organisms who could be living in the wood. If you get mulch that is made fresh on the spot, you have to be careful its not infested with termites or other insects if you plan on using it around your home.

My uncle who is a wildlife biologist says that there are places where you can take your trees to lakes and ponds. The fish can hide in them and lay their eggs. (I think that is correct ;)
