Yesterday Niel and I managed to sneak off and watch The Squid and The Whale in one of our favorite neighborhoods in Queens. Kew Gardens. The neighborhood has the best pizzeria, an artsy theater, an old world feel combined with the newness of the Long Island Rail Road, an organic shop, and a neat German bakery with the most awesome cherry struedal. And its ok that its only Indian restaurant is not so good. The movie wasn't as we expected it to be. Not enough quirky, more serious. Not bad though. But the struedal was heaven. We don't get out to Kew Gardens very often but when we do we make sure we visit The Homestead Bakery and purchase the cherry confection. The pastry itself reminds me of Baklava dough. So I am sure with most baked good the dough they use is Phyllo. It is light, flaky, with a nutty taste to it, and has a bit of brown sugar sprinkled on top. Though I am not certain if the owners use canned cherries or fresh ones, and honestly I don't care really; the filling is just the perfect combination of sweet and tart.
