Last Thursday Niel, my mom and I went to see the play Beast On The Moon. It is about a young couple, both survivors of the Armenian Genocide who are trying to deal with what they had endured as well as getting used to one another. The husband Aram, who lost his parents and siblings is so intent on getting back that family structure as he knew it, sends away for Seta who is only 15 at the time of their marriage. Seta who is just so happy to be alive, has to grow up very fast in their relationship. By dealing with Aram's pain as well as her own. It was a very emotional story and acted out very well. I hope if you're in the NYC area you'll get the opportunity to see it. Please read Niel's thoughts of the play in his May 27 post.

What does beast of the moom mean? Is it a reference to something that happened during the war?

Well in the play it describes The Beast on The Moon as being an eclipse of the moon but the Turks at that time thought it was a beast on the moon and would shoot cannons at it. While their Armenian neighbors just watched the eclipse. Then they turned the cannons on the Armenians.

crazy Turks!

I dated a guy in high school who was Armenian (and some Greek too) and he used to talk about the troubles in his country.

That sounds like a play I'd like, if only I was in NYC.

Hope you can get to NY sometime soon to see it.

When I see posts from you like this, it confused me a bit. I would think you would be happy the US overthrew Sadaam considering what he did to his people and people of the neighboring countries. Yet you are against the war. Perhaps if someone like president Bush were around 100 years ago, the slaughter of the Armenian people wouldn't have gone on for so long.

If someone like Bush were around then, it still would have happened.

-Armenia doens't have oil.

-Turkey is a strategic ally.

-People like Bush don't do anything that doesn't help themselves.

And the big difference is we went into Iraq not to help the Iraqi people, but to stop Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction. Yes it is good Saddam is no longer in power, he was a total asshole, but the poorly planned war has flooded Iraq with terrorists (who weren't there before) and the new democractic goverment they have has no chance of survival. In 10-15 years we'll be back in Iraq battling the dictator that overthrows the freely elected government.

Jenn - glad you're not with him anymore! Each culture has a wacky person or so.

Mike-Two different things.

I guess only time will tell what will happen in the middle east. Some positives have occured.

As far as the whole oil defense, I'm not going to debate that all again. That's way too easy of a come back. It's like people saying this and that happened during Clintons presidency because he was busy screwing around with interns.

Take president Bush out of the equation. Look past your hatred of the president and think for a moment. What if the prime minister of Great Britain, the president of Russia, the emperor of Japan anyone in the world would have stepped in and helped the Armenian people. Would the slaughter have gone on for 10+ years? Why did the world unite to help fight against Germany, Russia and Japan during WWII, yet noone helped the people in Armenia? Why did the world fight to overthrow Hitler? Did the Jews being slaughtered in concentration camps have oil?

I'm not saying President Bush could have been the savior of the Armenian people. Im just saying that there need to be more politicians with a backbone.

And Ani, the situations aren't that different. They are finding mass graves all over Iraq. Sadaam was slaugtering thousands of people. If he hadn't been watched by the UN and overthrown by the US he would still be in power murdering, raping and torturing. Isn't that what the Turks did to the Armenians? Obviously it's 100 years later and times are different, but you still have an evil tirant, you still have people being murdered. It's not all that different.

We aren't going to agree or change one another's minds. I don't know why politicians say and don one thing and not to others.

Well Germany was trying to take over Europe with Italy. And why japan was involved is still sketchy to me.

I think people got involved to stop Russia from becoming too powerful. Saving the jews became secondary.

And Mike you are right some government should have grown a spine and stopped Turkey.

Thanks Niel for explaining it so well both times.
