Some Fridays I don't have much to say. On those rare occasions (hahahahah) I will just post a meme or/and a video. I just discovered Mika, so today I will leave you with a video for one of his songs. He reminds me of Freddy Mercury. Have a nice weekend all.

Ay there are still a good deal things I have not perfected. One of them is making sweet potato fries. Every time I go to a restaurant and I eat some the fries are crispy and perfect. Yet when I try to duplicate them at home with baking it just does not work. I thought baking them would be healthier. Well this time I gave in and I fried them. I figured the healthiness in the sweet potato would counter act the frying process. They were a bit better, but not perfect. I got a tip that they need to be double fried to get perfect.

I remember I loved wrestling ever since I was a little girl. My brother and I would watch together. I then thought it was all real. I didn't really understand what was expected of a wrestler. I don't really know if the wrestlers themselves really do either. That love of wrestling continues till now for me though. I was happy to find out that Niel also enjoyed watching it. Something we share. Every Monday night we watch Raw. It is the best of the three shows.

There are a lot of wrestlers who always have to win, who just do it for the show and glory. Then there are the wrestlers who stay under the radar, who perform night after night for the fans and because they love that business. They can't think of another job. It gets in their blood young. One of those wrestlers was Chris Benoit.

Chris Benoit and his family were found dead Monday in their Atlanta home. When Niel and I heard late Monday night we were in shock. Chris was so hardworking, helping younger wrestlers, quiet, and did what was expected of him. We thought it had to be carbon monoxide poisoning or a robbery gone bad, that took them. I thought to myself at least he will be with Eddie now.

Then more information started to pour in. And our hearts sank. How could this have happened. He was so young. Just turned forty. He was a father of three. What made him snap. What he did to his youngest and his wife we can never understand. I still haven't fully digested it all. Neither of us have. What made him do it. What happens to these giants, larger then life men and women when they go into that business.

Our condolences go out to his remaining family members.

I never thought I would see an Armenian ice cream cone again. I have fond memories of eating ice cream in Armenia. The cone would get nice and soft. And the ice cream tasted so fresh. Although the ice cream was always vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. It was the best tasting I ever had. Especially the vanilla. Then we moved to American and my tastes became more refined. I fell in love with Pistachio, Cookies and Cream and Rocky Road. Then the other day my mother found some at the Eastern European deli in her neighborhood. I was so excited. Although the packaging was of course in English, since the distributers and makers want it to sell in the states. However It tastes exactly the same as I remember it. And I get to travel thousands of miles every time I eat one.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. This weekend I participated in Shannon's bloggy photo days. She is mastermind behind bloggy photo days. It made my weekend of errands and chores a lot of fun. Niel went camping, got badly sunburned but still had a great time. Below is a collage of the pictures I took. All the other pics are up at my flickr site. It was fun seeing what my friends were doing the same time as I was. Well about the same time. Thanks again to Shannon for the idea and to everyone that participated.

After Niel got home and rested. We watched Accepted and had burgers stuffed with Portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese. Both were good! For some reason after not watching South Park for eight years. I find the show really funny again.

Since its Summer and most folks will be grilling more often I thought I'd share an article I found on how to make grilling safer.

Another Armenian cold cut I like is Sujuk. It is much spicier than Basterma, Sujuk is a bit more peppery through out the the meat unlike Basterma which is primarily around the skin. Sujuk like Basterma though is dry cured. It is a bit firmer in its texture. They both however can be eaten as appetizers or in an omelet. Here is an interesting article and video from Real Simple suggesting what items to purchase if you are ever in an Armenian market. You know if you already don't have an idea what to purchase from reading my blog. I would have to add Tarragon leaves, Basterma, Sujuk and black basil to their list. Good eating.

I enjoy the Game Show Network. They have some of my favorite old game shows($100,000 Pyramid, and Press Your Luck) and I found new favorites such as Lingo and Chain Reaction. When I can't find anything else interesting on television I always turn to the Game Show Network to be entertained.

I thought Eat This:1,000 Things to Eat Before You Diet was a strange subtitle for a book. Because to me the title meant suggestions for naughty dishes full of fat and cholesterol. Eat This turned out to be a guide book on regional foods, from local fruit to cuisine, both healthy and non healthy. It is a good book to have if you are going on vacation and you want to see what the specialty of the area is. Or if you have heard about a particular food and don't know how to order it, the book gives that tip also. Eat This also is party history book because it goes into detail on how certain foods were cultivated and recipes created. A interesting read. Thanks hon.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Friday after work I went to see Niel play for his company's softball team. He's been on the team for three seasons now and enjoys it. Every spring I go see some of his games. Friday's game had to be forfeited because the other team showed up late and the umpire left. But the two teams played anyway. Niel's company won. Afterwards we went to pick up some of his work clothes from his office, drop off his softball equipment and get something to eat. We had dessert twice. For dessert we normally eat seasonal fruits, but when we passed by Choux Factory, I knew I had to try a cream puff. Like most cream puffs I assumed the taste would come once I got to the cream part. But the pastry was very flaky and had a hint of cinnamon. Delicious. We were wondering where Gudt Food was when I spotted it across the street. We'd been meaning to go there for a while now. They sell healthy versions of hot dogs, vegetarian and seafood. We ordered the champion dog and the chili cheese dog meals. The food was really good and moderately priced. We also picked up some authentic New Orleans style beignetes (which were dessert #2). So delicous. We made our way home and fell asleep on the couches around 9. Yes we sure do know how to party. LOL.

Niel and I thought Saturday would be low key and just for resting, but the weather was really lovely so we went to Governor's Island. It was an inexpensive outing. Only the cost of the subway ride. There is no admission fee for the ferry or the island, which is shaped like an ice cream cone.
It was lovely, but also eerie because we're basically walking around an abandoned town. Most of the buildings we couldn't walk into, but the ones we could were huge. There was even a band that entertained folks who were tired of walking around its 90 acres. Niel mentioned the band leader Jim Vavino is also a guitarist for the Max Weinberg band. Niel smartly packed some granola for us to munch on. It was PB & J granola. Very tasty. One part of the island with the original buildings is the historic area. There is another which has apartments built in the 60's is dilapidated and the city hopes to turn it into a park. Hopefully a nice park like Central park and not a water park. The historic part will also house a school. I am worried the historic section could get defaced. After we came back to Manhattan we walked around the Southstreet Seaport for a bit. Wow was it packed. They had a trampoline contraption for kids in the food court. And John Lithgow was singing in the rain. Yes it rained and poor Niel got soaked. In the evening we had dinner with Niel's mom at the new mall. I've said it before the mall's Amish Market is fantastic.

Sunday Niel and I went to my parents for a BBQ. Afterwards all of us went bowling. That was a lot of fun. Niel won both rounds and he even got a turkey. Niel and I then came home and watched Epic Movie. Blech.

Got tagged by Mother Mother Ocean.

4 FACTS ABOUT ME:

1. I try to cook a different meal we have never tried before each day of the week.

2. When we have the AC or fan on when it is unbearably humid I still have to wear a hat because the cold gives me a headache.

3. I like looking for and finding recipes.

4. I prefer the temperature to be in the 60's or 70's. Nothing lower or higher.

4 HABITS I HAVE: I guess these can be good or bad.

1. I am constantly battling not biting my nails. I did very good for a few months and I had lovely long nails. Then I didn't go to a salon to get them shaped and tried to cut them myself. Save money and all. I am low maintenance. That was a disaster and then I started to bite them again. Well now I have stopped again biting again. A constant struggle.

2. I can hoard things. Have been changing that.

3. I'm polite to servers. Even if they suck.

4. I always put on moisturizer and sunblock. Being fair skinned I like to be good to it.

FOUR NEW THINGS I HAVE LEARNED OR EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS:

1. Folks you think you can rely on, you can't.

2. Life can throw a big curve ball at you.

3. Enjoy every single day.

4. I'm worthy.

FOUR THINGS I WANT TO TRY OR DO IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS:

Just for Niel and I and the people we care about to be healthy and happy.

I'm supposed to tag 8 people for this, but if you want to participate great. If not no biggie.

Funny thing on American Dad I want to share. I guess funny only for people who enjoy American Dad and Dog The Bounty Hunter.

Thank you again to Sara for coming up with Weekend Cook Book Challenge. And for letting me be the host this month. I had a lot of fun. I have to be honest. I was a bit nervous hosting WCBC #17. I really wanted to have a lot of enteries and do well. But then my inbox slowly started to fill up and I was quite the happy cook. Although the ingredient did prove to be a challenge (as the title does say say challenge) all the recipes sound and look wonderful. I’ve posted about how versatile cornmeal is and how I like to cook with it. And the participants sure proved its versatility. Thank you to all everyone that participated and sent such appetizing recipes. It gave me a great opportunity to find new food blogs and recipes. The below entries are posted in the order I recieved them.

My first email was a breakfast recipe from new blogger Lisa at Food and Spice for Cranberry (one of my favorites) and Cornmeal muffins.

Chris, from Melecotte also a new food blogger submitted a very tasty looking recipe for an Italian cake, a Pear and Polenta cake to be exact. I love desserts with pear.

Marta an Italian In The US , also submitted an Italian dessert, cookies, using cornmeal, raisins, and lemon. Light and chewy looking. Her recipe is from The Good Cook, a collection of international recipes.

The next recipe was from Tami at Running with Tweezers. She made a snack using cornmeal: Cornmeal Crackers with Pumpkin Seeds. You’re right Tami it does look like it would do well at a wine tasting.

Carla from Chocolate Moosey made Corn Pup muffins. A savory muffin recipe that looks really good.

Traci and Steve from Basting Away in Margaritaville chose Spicy Beef Empanadas from Emeril Legassi's New Orleans Cooking cookbook, as their first recipe for Weekend Cookbook challenge. I sure do love empanadas.

Eunice from Lemonalmond.blogspot made Lemon Cornmeal Cake. And I am glad because of WCBC Eunice decided to bake again. Doesn't her cake look lovely?

Ahn from Ahnsfoodblog, made Orange & Cardamom Polenta Biscuits. It must smell so wonderful. I like that she used heart shaped cook cutters to shape the biscuits.

Newcomer Sukanyaramkumar from Hot and Sweet Bowl made Fried Okra With Scallion Dip. It looks like a marvelous appetizer. One I can’t wait to try.

Lisa from La Mia Cucina baked an Alton Brown dessert Pineapple Upside Down Corn Cake. I adore Pineapple Upside Down Cake. But had never heard of Pineapple Upside Down corn cake till now. Oh that Alton is a favorite of mine. Thank you Lisa.

Steph the creator of A Whisk And a Spoon baked a Lemon Polenta Cake for this round of WCBC. Looks so tasty Steph.

Mary aka the Breadchick’s contribution is Microwave Tamale Pie! Mexican food is one of my favorites. Her description before the recipe is pretty interesting. The recipe looks mouthwatering and simple to cook. Thanks Mary!

I was happy one of my favorite food bloggers Ruth who has a variety of food blogs, decided to participate in this months WCBC challenge. Her entry was Lemony Biscotti. So happy you found a new favorite recipe.

Sara the mastermind behind Weekend Cookbook Challenge as well as her own neat blog I like To Cook, after a bit of testing, made a yummy looking breakfast dish Lemon Cornmeal Waffles. Glad it turned out well Sara.

Mallow from Sweet and Savory Foods made dessert, Lemon Cornmeal Cookies. A Martha Stewart Christmas recipe. Mallow found a way to mix them up a bit.

Quellia from All Things Edible made a tasty looking dessert Peach and blueberry cobbler with cornmeal biscuits. Blueberries and peaches go great together.

Marye from Apron Strings and Simmering Things baked a Sweet Potato Cornbread. Intriguiging.

Asha from Aroma Hope made Tex-Mex Corn Bread. She recomends enjoying it with a bowl of spicy chili. I agree.

Chef Girl Paige made Cornbread Croutons to go along with her yummy looking seafood stew. How inventive!

Halo from Cook (almost) Anything at Least Once made a great looking and sounding dessert: Polena Poundcake.

And of course you saw my entry(Pupusas) yesterday.

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

My entry for Weekend Cook Book Challenge 17 are Pupusas. Pupusa is a South American savory pasty made from corn meal or corn flour, cheese and spices. You can find them being sold by vendors in the streets. They remind me a lot of Arepas. Which I only found out about fairly recently. I love appetizers. They are my favorite part of a meal. If I can help it I rather order appetizers than a full meal. That way I can try something a little bit of everything. This is why I thought Pupusas was the perfect cornmeal recipe for this round.

Papusas from Recipe Link

Ingredients:
2 c Masa harina(cornmeal or cornflour)
1 1/2 c Warm water
1 T Ground cumin, made from
-lightly toasted cumin seed
Salt and pepper to taste
6 oz Ranchero cheese, or mild
-melting cheese such as
-Monterey jack, grated (2
-cups)
1/2 c Chopped cilantro

Papusas Instructions:

In a mixing bowl, mix together the masa harina, water, cumin, and 1/2
teaspoon salt and stir into a manageable dough.
The dough should be soft but not sticky; add more flour if needed.
If dough is dry and hard to form, add more water.
To make 3-inch round papusas, put about 1/2 cup of the dough in your
hand for each papusa.
Roll into a ball and flatten in your hand.
Put 1/3 cup cheese, 1 teaspoon cilantro, and salt and pepper to taste
in the center.
Work the edges up over the filling and again form a ball, completely
enclosing the filling.
This takes only a few seconds.
Flatten each ball to about 1/4 inch or less and cook the papusas on a
hot, lightly oiled griddle for about 3 minutes per side, or until both sides
are lightly browned.
Serve warm.

The weekend couldn¹t have come quicker. Work is going to get much busier. Hopefully this will mean more money money money.

The weekend was nice. We planned for one thing but that did not work out again but we still had fun. For a few years now Niel and I have been trying to go hot air ballooning. But the weather always deters that plan. Niel even found an inexpensive way. The Philadelphia zoo offers it at a very affordable price, but of course the weather was going to be crappy in the afternoon so they didn't fly. But Niel likes the historical aspect of the town so we did a bit of site seeing. So it wasn't a total waste. And honestly I was with him and he can make anything fun. He was playing tour guide. We had been to Philly when we were dating so it was nice to be back. We had seen a lot of the city back then so we did some things we hadn't before. We went to Christ Church, saw an archaeological dig, took a tour of Betsy Ross's house and ate cheese steak at Geno's and Pat's. One thing we did see again was the Liberty Bell. The city had now built a large building over it and you had to go through security to see it. A lot of things had changed about the city since 9-11. Of course we'll try again to go ballooning. The rest of the weekend was spent running errands, and cleaning. Tomorrow is the deadline for Weekend Cook Book Challenge 17: cornmeal. I'll be posting mine tomorrow and then the round up on Wednesday.

I've been seeing this meme floating around and decided to do it. It is a list of a few of my favorite things at the moment.

I was at the supermarket when I thought what I saw was a box of regular mac and cheese, but I accidentally picked up the instant kind. And I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. I know I know the one from scratch is much tastier. But to me it's two different pasta dishes.

I love Pop Tarts. I hadn't eaten any in a long time. So when I passed by the aisle with the Pop Tarts I decided to purchase the frosted strawberry. Oh so good.

Method just rules so I was happy they came out with a line of skin care products. I really enjoy their Water Flower body lotion. It is light smelling and not oily.

I usually really enjoy Hagen Daaz Strawberry ice cream or whatever brand of Pistachio, but then decided to try Rocky Road. I think it was the little marshmallows that got me. I prefer Edy's and Baskin Robbins brands.

One of my favorite Armenian cold cuts is Basterma. Unlike traditional American deli meats it is dry cured. It is spicy and delicious. I can remember many winters when my parents would make it from scratch. My brother and I would have to wait weeks before it was done. It is a long process. Now my parents and I purchase it from Middle Eastern or Russian stores. When I was younger I used to enjoy eating it by itself, but I would have to agree with my dad that it taste's better with some Lavash or Pita. Basterma is served as an Armenian appetizer platter along with hummus, olives, Lavash, feta, and red pepper dip.

I used to love going to the movies. Large screen, popcorn and drink. I could sit back for a few hours and escape from the problems of the world. Then more and more people forgot their manners. They wouldn't turn off their cell phones, talk loudly, bring their children to a movie that made them freak out. They thought they were at home. I would have to go to see a new film at strange hours. It became a luxury instead of a past time. So when Netflix came out I decided it would be much cheaper and quieter to enjoy a film at home. I didnn't go out of the house to see a film as often. I recently found out that you can snitch on other movie patrons if they are too noisy and get them kicked out. It is would also be nice if snacks and the price of the movie itself could be a little bit cheaper, then I would probably go to the movies much more.

Wanted to spread the word about The Foodie Blog Roll started by the Leftover Queen. It's another way to find food blogs and add your food blog to the list. I've had a good number of food bloggers stop by my site and I theirs. It's neat to be able to visit blogs from the different parts of the world, meet new folks and share recipes. So thank you to Leftover Queen for creating The Foodie Blog Roll.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. It was a scorcher in NYC. The reported thunderstorms never happened. I hope they come soon. Seems like we jumped into Summer when there are really two more weeks of spring left.

Friday night Niel went to scouts, I did a bit of cleaning then we had a late dinner with some friends. I know it makes Niel happy whenever he see them. With everyone going in different directions I know its nice that they can still reconnect. Good, true friends are important.

Saturday Niel had a work related event to take care of and I ran errands on my own. Later we met up for lunch at a new Sushi restaurant we had been meaning to try called Sushi Land. The food is excellent. The freshest Sushi I have ever tasted. They offer the typical yummy Japanese cuisine but also fried ice cream and cheesecake. I think we have to go back for just dessert next time. The prices were very affordable. In the evening Niel went to a bachelor party and I put away laundry while I watched She's The Man. Amanda Bynes is the same character in all her movies. I guess she's made a niche for herself. But the concept of the film was such a stretch. Found my first mosquito bite of the season. It is huge, red and itchy.

Sunday the heat had broken a little bit and we got some rain. We had lunch with my parents. My dad bbq'd anyway. There were ribs, peppers and tomatoes. My mom made sides of salad, a onion and green bean quiche, ratatoulle, medley of potatoes, onion and mushrooms with mini meatloaves. She always serves two entries. We had watermelon for dessert. Mmmmm. The food was all so good. Afterwards we ended up watching a soccer match that was happening in Argentina. My dad loves soccer. We left with containers of goodies and just relaxed the rest of the day. Could do anything with the hubby and its fun.

Did anyone see Grillfest Southbeach on the Food Network? All the recipes looked so delicious.

Niel got me Eat This:1,001 Things to Eat Before You Diet. I am looking forward to reading it. Thanks again sweets.
I will give a review after I am done.

I am excited about a new series debuting tonight on CBS at 8 called Creature Comforts. It's brought to you from the creators(Aardman Animation) of the original British version and Wallace and Gromit. Just a bunch of people talking but, the voice coming out of a claymated animal. Funny stuff.

June 12 is the deadline to email me your recipes if you would like to participate in Weekend Cook Book Challenge 17. Cornmeal is the main ingredient. Thank you
